Most people do not read web pages, they scan them. If your sentences are long and your words are complicated, readers leave before they reach the useful part. When I started checking readability, I noticed my articles sounded like university essays. Simplifying them kept readers on the page longer and brought more enquiries.

What is readability

Readability measures how easy a text is to understand. Formulas use sentence length and word complexity to estimate the education level needed to read it comfortably. For the web, simpler is almost always better.

What our checker calculates

The Readability Checker analyses your text and shows:

  • Flesch Reading Ease from 0 to 100, where higher means easier
  • Reading level label such as easy or fairly difficult
  • Flesch-Kincaid grade level
  • Gunning Fog index
  • Syllables per word
  • Reading time
  • Checks for average sentence length, complex words and your longest sentence

How to use it

  1. Open the Readability Checker.
  2. Paste at least a few sentences of your text.
  3. Click Check Readability.
  4. Fix the warnings, then check again.

Understanding the Flesch score

  • 90 to 100: very easy, like simple stories
  • 60 to 70: plain English, ideal for most websites
  • 50 to 60: fairly difficult
  • 30 to 50: difficult, like academic writing
  • Below 30: very difficult

For most blogs and business sites, aim for 60 or higher.

How to improve readability

  • Shorten sentences. Aim for an average under 20 words.
  • Use simple words. Say use instead of utilise and help instead of facilitate.
  • One idea per sentence.
  • Use active voice. We fixed the bug reads better than the bug was fixed by us.
  • Break up walls of text with headings, lists and short paragraphs.

The longest sentence check shows you exactly where to start.

Readability and SEO

Readability is not a direct ranking factor, but it strongly affects how long people stay and whether they find what they need. Google rewards pages that satisfy readers. Easy writing also works better for featured snippets and voice search, where answers must be short and clear.

Fix hard paragraphs quickly

If a paragraph is too complex, try the simple tone in the SEO Paragraph Rewriter, then edit the result in your own voice.

Writing for Pakistani readers

Many readers in Pakistan read English as a second language. Even if they understand it well, simple sentences are faster and more comfortable to read on a phone during a busy day. Avoid idioms that do not translate well, explain technical terms the first time you use them and prefer common words. You do not need to write down to your audience, only write clearly. Clear writing earns trust, and trust brings customers.

Check before every publish

Make readability part of your final checklist. Paste the article, look at the score and the longest sentence, fix the worst two or three sentences and check again. It takes about three minutes. Over time you will naturally start writing shorter sentences, and your first drafts will already score well.

Readability for different audiences

A blog for doctors can be a bit more technical than a blog for parents, but both benefit from short sentences. Know your reader and set a target score. For general audiences aim for 60 or more, for professional audiences 45 to 60 is acceptable when terms are explained clearly. Test a few of your best performing pages to find the style your readers already like.

Frequently asked questions

Does technical content need a lower score

Technical topics can be harder, but you can still use short sentences and explain terms simply.
