Before buying an old domain from a seller on a Facebook group, a friend asked me to check it. The seller claimed the domain was ten years old. A quick domain age check showed it was registered only fourteen months earlier. That one check saved him a lot of money. Domain age is useful for many reasons, from checking deals to understanding competitors.

What is domain age

Domain age is the time since a domain name was first registered. It is recorded by the registry that manages the domain extension, such as .com or .net. Along with the creation date, registries also store the expiry date, the last update and the registrar.

How our checker works

Our Domain Age Checker reads live data from official registry records using the RDAP system, the modern replacement for old WHOIS. It shows:

  • Exact domain age in years, months and days
  • Creation date
  • Expiry date
  • Last updated date
  • Registrar where the domain is managed

How to use it

  1. Open the Domain Age Checker.
  2. Enter any domain, for example example.com.
  3. Click Check Domain Age.
  4. Read the age and dates in the results.

Does domain age help SEO

Domain age by itself is not a strong ranking factor. Google has said that a new domain can rank well with great content. However, older domains often have more history, more backlinks and more trust, so they tend to rank more easily. Age is a sign of opportunity, not a magic boost.

When domain age is really useful

  • Buying a domain: confirm the seller's claims before paying.
  • Competitor research: older competitors usually have more links and content, so plan realistically.
  • Trust checks: a website claiming to be an established company but registered last month deserves caution.
  • Renewal planning: check expiry dates so your own domains never lapse.

Protect your own domain

An expired domain can be lost in days and someone else can buy it, along with all your traffic and email. Turn on auto renewal, keep your registrar login safe and check the expiry date once a year. If a domain is important, renew it for several years at once.

Some extensions are not supported

A few country extensions do not publish RDAP data publicly. If a domain like a .pk address does not return results, it means the registry does not share it through the public system, not that the domain is invalid. Most global extensions such as .com, .net, .org, .info and newer ones are supported.

Checking a domain before you buy

If you plan to buy an aged domain for a new project, the creation date is only the first check. Also look at what the domain was used for before. Search the domain name in quotes to see old mentions, and use the Backlink Checker to see which sites still link to it. A ten year old domain that hosted spam or adult content can carry problems that take months to clean up. A younger domain with a clean history and a few relevant links is often the better buy. Finally confirm the expiry date and ask the seller to transfer it through the registrar properly, so ownership changes officially and safely.

Frequently asked questions

Is domain age the same as website age

Not always. A domain may be registered years before a website is built on it, or it may have hosted different websites over time.

Why does the age reset after a domain expires

If a domain fully expires and is registered again, the registry records a new creation date.

Is this data official

Yes. It comes directly from registry RDAP services.
