Anchor text is the clickable text of a link. It looks like a small detail, but it sends a strong signal about what the linked page is about. It can also cause problems. Years ago many sites built hundreds of links with the exact same keyword anchor. Google's Penguin update punished them heavily. Today a natural mix of anchors is the safe and effective approach.

Types of anchor text

  • Exact or partial match: contains your target keyword, for example cheap web hosting
  • Branded: uses your brand name, for example SEO Tools Pro
  • Naked URL: the address itself, for example smartooly.site
  • Generic: words like click here, read more or this website
  • Image: a linked image, where the alt text acts as the anchor
  • Descriptive: natural phrases that describe the page

What our analyzer shows

The Anchor Text Analyzer reads all links on a page and shows:

  • Anchor type distribution with counts and percentages
  • Most used anchor texts so you can spot repetition

You can enter an optional target keyword and brand name to classify anchors more accurately.

How to use it

  1. Open the Anchor Text Analyzer.
  2. Enter a page URL.
  3. Optionally add your target keyword and brand name.
  4. Click Analyze Anchor Text.

What a healthy mix looks like

For backlinks pointing to your site, a natural profile is usually dominated by branded and naked URL anchors, with a smaller share of descriptive and keyword anchors. If more than a third of your backlinks use exact keyword anchors, it can look manipulated.

For internal links on your own site, descriptive anchors are encouraged. They help Google understand your pages. Just avoid using the same exact phrase every single time.

Improving anchor text on your site

  • Replace click here and read more with descriptive text.
  • Vary anchors that point to the same page.
  • Make image links meaningful with good alt text.
  • Keep anchors short and readable.

Use the Internal Link Checker to see every internal link and its anchor in one list.

Anchor text for outreach

When you earn guest posts or mentions, you often cannot control the anchor. That is fine. Natural anchors chosen by other editors look the most trustworthy. If you are asked for a preference, suggest your brand name or a descriptive phrase rather than an exact money keyword.

An example of fixing anchors

An online tuition academy in Faisalabad had a blog where every post ended with the same line: click here for online tuition. Their main course page received forty internal links, all using generic or identical anchors. We changed them to varied descriptive anchors like online maths tuition for matric, FSc physics classes online and our live tuition schedule, each placed in a relevant sentence. The course page began ranking for several new long-tail searches within weeks, because Google now understood exactly what it offered.

Check competitor pages too

Run the analyzer on a competitor page that ranks well. Look at how they link to their own important pages and what anchors they use. You will often notice that strong sites use clear, descriptive anchors in their menus, breadcrumbs and article text. Copy the approach, not the exact words, and adapt it to your own site structure.

Frequently asked questions

Can anchor text cause a penalty

Excessive exact match anchors from low quality links can lead to ranking drops. A natural mix avoids this.

Is click here bad for SEO

It is not harmful, but it wastes an opportunity to describe the target page.

Should internal links use keywords

Yes, descriptive keyword anchors are fine internally, as long as they read naturally and vary.
