Imagine two websites. The first has 500 backlinks, all from one website footer. The second has 50 backlinks from 50 different respected sites. The second website is almost always stronger. That is why SEO professionals care more about referring domains than raw backlink counts.

What is a referring domain

A referring domain is a unique website that links to you. If one blog links to you ten times, that is ten backlinks but only one referring domain. Google values variety, because many independent sites recommending you is a much stronger signal than one site repeating its recommendation.

What our checker shows

The Referring Domains Checker scans the web for pages linking to or mentioning a domain, verifies each link live and groups the results by website. For each referring domain you see:

  • Number of verified links from that site
  • Number of mentions without a link
  • Link type dofollow, nofollow or mention only

How to use it

  1. Open the Referring Domains Checker.
  2. Enter any domain.
  3. Click Find Referring Domains.
  4. Sort your attention by sites with mentions but no links, these are easy outreach targets.

Why referring domains matter

Studies of search results consistently show a strong relationship between the number of quality referring domains and rankings. Each new relevant domain adds a fresh vote of trust. Repeated links from the same site add much less value after the first one.

How to grow referring domains

  • Create link worthy content such as original data, local price surveys, detailed guides and free tools.
  • Turn mentions into links. Contact sites that mention you without linking.
  • Guest post on relevant blogs. Find them with the Backlink Generator.
  • Get listed in respected local and industry directories.
  • Build partnerships with suppliers, clients and associations who can link to you.

Quality over quantity

Ten referring domains from relevant, real websites are worth more than one hundred from spammy directories and link farms. Low quality links can even trigger penalties. Before chasing a link, check the site with the Website Authority Checker and simply ask yourself whether a real visitor would ever click it.

Compare with competitors

Run the checker for the top three websites in your niche. Note which domains appear for all of them. These are usually the most important industry sites, directories and publications. If they do not link to you yet, they should be first on your outreach list. The Competitor Backlink Analysis tool does this comparison automatically.

A simple tracking routine

Once a month, run the checker for your own domain and note the number of referring domains in a sheet. Next to it write what you did that month, such as two guest posts or one new directory listing. After a few months you will see which activities actually add new websites to your profile. Double down on what works and drop what does not. Small, steady growth in referring domains is one of the clearest signs that your SEO is moving in the right direction.

Watch for lost domains too

Referring domains can also disappear. A blog may close, a partner may redesign its site or a directory may remove old listings. If your count drops, run the checker again and compare with your last list. Contact sites that removed a link by mistake and ask politely if it can be restored, especially if the page still mentions you.

Frequently asked questions

Is one referring domain with many links bad

Not bad, just less valuable than many different domains. Sitewide footer links can look unnatural if overused.

Do nofollow referring domains count

They pass less ranking value but still bring traffic and make your profile look natural.

Does the tool find all referring domains

It finds those visible through live web search and verifies them. Very large paid databases may list more.
